BUCK PARADISE JOURNAL
Jan.30/12 - Back home in SASKATCHEWAN. Had a very nice trip to Mexico. The weather was great, the resort was very nice and a all around great trip. We fished Monday and caught some yellow tails, Bonitas and a few Mackerel. It was a good day. I will post a few pics on the website soon. Good to be home. The boys took good care of things and everything is still standing. We married off our good friends there in Mexico. I got to run. Lots to do. Phone is full of messages. My carpenter just showed up to finish up some things in the shop. I have to go to town to get a load of seed wheat. Then I have to start getting things ready to move canola. Busy busy but the weather is awesome still here so I better get out and take advantage of it. Later all and I promise to get some pictures of the trip up soon.

Jan.21/12 - Hello Everyone. Here is a quick update for you all with what is happening with me and the people of Buck Paradise. Been chasing the boys hockey lots the last couple of weeks. Garets team lost out in there 1st provincial round vs Prince Albert so they are done that unfortunately. They beat PA in both regular season games so that sucks we could'nt beat them to go on in provincials. Ian's team is in a losing streak slump..... Hopefully they will start to get some wins as they are all working hard. Brandon Schreiber and I made a last minute decision to go to Vegas to the Shot Show last Sunday. We flew out Monday afternoon and met Brian Bowers there. It was a great couple of days and I met a lot of big names in the Outdoor hunting Industry. First night there we went to the Venetian and hung out with Terry Drury. Had a few beers with him and talked "Deer". The next night we went back and hooked upwith newly engaged "Pat & Nicole" with Driven TV. Partied with them all night and had a great time. Mark Drury came to say hi as we had met last year. I was surprised he remembered me. The next day we hooked up with Fred Zink and his beautiful wife Dawn. Fred assured me he is coming back to hunt with us this fall. It will be great to get Freddy back in camp. I also said hi to Jim Shockey, met Mike Waddell and quickly talked a little bear hunting. He might come up. Shane Smith from Antler Insanity was there. Met T-Bone Turner. That was pretty cool. Also spent a few great hours with my friend Mike Hanback and his son. Also hung out with the Primos boys, Jimmy & Will were both there, we looked at a few of each other deer pics from the past season and I am looking forward to having the Primo's boys back up. They want to lock in a waterfowl hunt also. So it was a great show for me. Great to see everyone and meet some new awesome people. Also got to say hi to Chad & Clay and his crew from the Fowl life for a few minutes. All good. Brandon and I flew home Thursday. I missed Garets hockey games... But oh well. He is off on a road trip this weekend. I watched Ian play Mannville last night. They lost 4-1 but still a great game. I better go pack.... Heading to Mexico for a week.... YEAH. Shelly and I are going to the wedding of our good friends Stu & Carol. Should be fun to relax and get some sun. Weather turned a little ugly this past week here in Sask. Snowing a bit today but still no accumulation to speak of. Been cold this past week, but suppose to warm up next week again. Great winter so far for the whitetail and all the other game out there. I will be back home on Jan.29th. The boys are holding down the fort for us while we are gone. We will see how that all goes.. :) Take care all. Talk to you when I get back.

Jan.10/12 - Off to Green Lake to put to rest my good friend and the best caretaker ever Norman. You will be greatly missed my old friend. Our condolences also go out to our good nieghbors the Duriez family on there loss of Ellie.

Jan.06/12 - Happy New Year to all my friends out there. Hope you had a safe and Happy New Years. Our was nice. We spent New Years Eve in Paradise Hill with friends at the local community (old) hall that we have there. The Hawks (Our senior hockey team that Garet sometimes plays on) put on a fundraiser for a local family to help incure some Hospital expenses for them. It was a great time and a lot of our friends were there. They had the Jr. Canada VS US team on a big screen. It was a good game with Canada winning. They won that game but when it came time to play to place in the Gold Medal game they lost out against Russia. Oh those Russians. It was a good game with a great comeback in the 3rd by the Canadians but they just could not get that last goal to tie it up. Garet played Wednesday night vs Lloyd. His team won 5-2. They played well. Garet got one assist. The weather again here is unbelievable. Great for the deer. Still very little snow. I was working with just my normal shoes yesterday outside all day. Above mild temps. I suspect this will make for great horn growth for 2012.... :) :) :). Went fishing a few more times. Had some good luck right after Christmas but it has slowed down now. I got to see a lot of great friends that I have not seen for awhile over the holidays. On a sad Note, my caretake Norman Rosenkerr from Green Lake passed today. He did a great job taking care of the lodge up there for us. Thank You Norm. We will miss you a lot. He had so many interesting stories and he loved to tell them to anyone. A lot of my hunters from Green Lake will know Norm. The funeral will probably be Monday or Tuesday and I will be there to honour the past life of my old friend Norman.
Ian has a hockey game tonight in Manville. Shelly and I are going to head to that on the Hougham bus with some other parents. Should be a fun evening.
On the outfitting side of things, good things are happening. Not much with Green Lake yet unfortunately but I am waiting to see how it will all shake out. Brother Dean & Cousin Brandon and I have other exciting things in the works. Spring bear hunts are booking nicely also. Give me a call to book a great hunt for a very reasonable fee. Keep checking back on here. I plan to keep updating more into the New Year. All the best everyone. Enjoy this little joke that was sent to me...
God Bless Norman!!!
A papa mole, a mama mole, and a baby mole,
all live together in a little mole hole.
One day, papa mole sticks his head
out of the hole, sniffs the air and said,
' Yummy! I smell maple syrup!'
The mama mole sticks her head out of the hole,
sniffs the air and said, 'Oh, Yummy! I smell honey!'
Now baby mole is trying to stick his head
out of the hole to sniff the air, but can't
because the bigger moles are in the way.
This makes him whine, 'Geez, all I can smell is....
MOL ASSES !
Dec.26/11 - Merry Christmas Everyone. Hope you all and your wonderful families had a great Christmas. Ours was wonderful. Shelly & the boys and I went to church New Years Eve and then headed to Mom's for food & drinks after with some of our family. Christmas morning we all slept in at our house and Shelly had to get everyone up to open some gifts. Santa was good again this year. Gift cards to Cabelas and I tunes were some of the things i got. Plus a underwater ice fishing camera. I am excited to use it and may head out this afternoon to see how it works. On Christmas Eve day Stu Barthel and his fiance Carole and neighbors Wayne & Travis Maier and Jason Kilcup all headed up to my favorite Splake Lake. We put a hurting on them. Caught our limit and then continued to just fish for fun and release. It was a great day. We all came back to my shop and cleaned all the fish and then has a awesome fish fry out in the shop with Shelly and the boys.
Hope to visit with some more family and friends throughout the rest of the week and try out the underwater camera. ;).
Have a great holiday everyone!
Grant
PS. Check out the pictures of our fishing trip on the photo gallery.
Dec.23/11 - Hello Everyone. Just sitting in the shop with my boys do some cleaning and sharping the chainsaw. The weather has been unbelievable. No snow (which sucks for sledding) to speak of and the temps have been awesome. Great for the deer, they are doing excellent. I believe it is weather like this that helps deer grow big horns. Brandon is working on expanding possibly up around the Goodsoil area. If something happens I will have lots of hunts to book up so stay in touch on that and watch this journal and the availability link. Garet and the Midwest Red wings lost Tuesday night. ugghhhhh..... Thats all i have to say about that. Then Garet played with the Senior Hawks Mens team on Wednesday against Walburg. Great game both ways but Walburg pulled off a win in the last 10 minutes of the game. Garet had a great game. Last night Ian played in Walburg VS Hillmond. Kinda wierd game as last year and the year before Ian played with most of these kids. Good 1st period and then our boys run out of steam and lost. Tonight Garet goes back to Walburg to play with the Senior Mens Hawks team again. I am looking forward to watching this game Walburg/Paradise Hill has had a old rivarly going on for before my time. It is exciting. Here is what we are doing for New Years. May have some friends out after this event is done. Going to go sharpen my saw. OH Ya, Brandon & Andrea Schreiber & Tanner Helboe and I smashed the Splake on Wednesday. It was awesome and they taste so great. I will post a picture on the website. I will call the Gallery "this & that". Later.

Dec.19/11- Had a great trip to the mountains. I am overwhelmed to say the least trying to get all of my hunters that want to hunt with me a place to hunt between Paradise Hill & Goodsoil. I am doing my best but to say the least I am not taking any new bookings for whitetail at this time. We will see how things go. Keep an eye on here and I will post when I know anything. Thanks. Again. Great trip to the mountains with my son. Just a long dang drive. He did great riding in the mountains and we had a lot of fun and put on a lot of hard miles. A friend and hunter of mine asked if I would share this with you all. Take care and talk soon. Going to work on bookings tomorrow for a bit and then maybe go ice fishing with Brandon Schreiber for a few hours tomorrow and then go to North Battleford to watch Garet play hockey. He got a goal and an assist in his last game that they won over beardys. If you would like to see more on his hockey google center four hockey league. He is in the Midget category. Also you can check out Ian's team on www.neahl.com Here is what Norm sent me. Talk soon. Grant
THE MARINES WANT THIS TO ROLL ALL OVER THE
U.S. , Canada and The World
Please don't delete this until you send it on. Let's send it around the world.
FRIENDS ARE BORN, NOT MADE
This is a poem being sent from a MarineTo his Dad. For those who take the time To read it, you'll see a letter from him to His dad at the bottom. It makes you truly thankful for not only the Marines, but ALL of our troops.
THE MARINE
We all came together,
Both young and old
To fight for our freedom,
To stand and be bold.
In the midst of all evil,
We stand our ground,
And we protect our country
From all terror around..
Peace and not war,
Is what some people say.
But I'll give my life,
So you can live the American way.
I give you the right
To talk of your peace.
To stand in your groups,
And protest in our streets.
But still I fight on,
I don't bitch, I don't whine.
I'm just one of the people
Who is doing your time.
I'm harder than nails,
Stronger than any machine.
I'm the immortal soldier,
I'm a U..S. MARINE!
So stand in my shoes,
And leave from your home.
Fight for the people who hate you,
With the protests they've shown.
Fight for the stranger,
Fight for the young.
So they all may have,
The greatest freedom you've won.
Fight for the sick,
Fight for the poor.
Fight for the cripple,
Who lives next door.
But when your time comes,
Do what I've done.
For if you stand up for freedom,
You'll stand when the fight's done.

Hey Dad,
Do me a favor and label this 'The Marine' and send it to everybody on your email list. Even leave this letter in it. I want this rolling all over the US and Canada and The World. I want every home reading it. Every eye seeing it, and every heart to feel it. So can you please send this for me? I would but my email time isn't that longand I don't have much time anyway.
You know what Dad? I wondered what it would be like to truly understand what JFK said in his inaugural speech.'When the time comes to lay down my life for my country, I do not cower from this responsibility. I welcome it' Well, now I know, and I do. Dad, I welcome the opportunity to do what I do. Even though I have left behind a beautiful wife, and I will miss the birth of our first born child, I would do it 70 times over to fight for the place that God has made for my home. I love you all and I miss you very much. I wish I could be there when Sandi has our baby, but tell her that I love her, and Lord willing, I will be coming home soon.
Give Mom a great big hug from me and give one to yourself too.
Aaron
Please let this marine (and all our military)know we care by passing his poem onto your friends even if you don't usually take time to forward mail...do it this time!
Thanks,
Let's help Aaron's dad spread the word .....
FREEDOM isn't FREE
Someone pays for you and me.
Dec.12/11 - Well another season is in the bag. It was a good one. Nothing compared to 2010 but no one that I know of did. It feels good to be done. Been working in my shop and booking hunts for next year. 2011 has been to say the least very challenging for me. As all of you know who follow my little blog on here we lost our shop in Paradise Hill last March. Terrible big loss. Well we have rebuilt. The new shop is awesome and I love it, but would take the old one back and all of my things back in a heart beat if I could. To add to my 2011 season we have some more bad news. I had two US partners in Buck N Bear Wilderness Adventures Ltd. That company ran the hunts out of Green Lake and the Beatty Lake camps. Short and sweet here is the story. One of my partners went through a divorce. The courts down there in the US awarded his 1/3 shares of (Buck N Bear) to his X wife. She would like to have her money. I made a offer which she declined. It was all that I figured I could do and justify. In November I consented to a receiver being appointed to try to figure out a way to get her money out of the company. The company (Buck N Bear) did NOT go bankrupt. That rumour is already floating around, but not true. The receiver now has control of Buck N Bear. If you are still interested in booking hunts with Buck N Bear Wilderness Adventures Ltd. Please call Graham 1-306-221-0813. I still own Buck Paradise (Paradise Hill camp) by myself and the Goodsoil camp (Dean & Brandon & I). So I will be booking Whitetail deer hunts for the both of them. I will also be booking Bear hunts through Buck Paradise and Waterfowl hunts also through Buck Paradise. So, ya, pretty crappy deal. I do not want to mislead anyone and this is what has happened. Bookings for Paradise Hill and Goodsoil are going very fast so if you are interested, I would not wait to long. Last year 2010 - between the 3 camps we harvested 15 bucks that gross scored over 170. Great year with a high 150 average. This year 5 over 170 between the 3 camps. Down but still pretty good. I will try to get on here at least once a week to keep giving you guys all something to look at and to keep our awesome website interesting. I am leaving to go skidooing for a few days with Ian (my 15 year old son). He is so excited and so am I. I will give a update on that when I get back home and also on the boys hockey. They are both doing awesome. Take care all. Sorry bout the news, but things have a way of working out. Talk to you all again soon.
Grant
Nov.30/11 - Warm weather, but we are still getting some good bucks. I am up at Green Lake, we will be done here on Saturday. We have a few hunters that booked 10 day hunts in Paradise Hill so we will be going there till Dec.07th. Then that will be a wrap. Lots of interest for next year which is awesome. Call to book your hunt today. Here is a good little story that was sent to me.
Fishing boat
A good ole Saskatchewan boy won a fishing boat in a raffle drawing.
He brought it home and his wife looks at him and says, "What the heck
you gonna do with that. Thereain't no water deep enough to float a
boat within 75 miles of here.";
He says, "I won it and I'm a gonna keep it."
His brother came over to visit several days later. He sees the wife
and asks where his brother is. She says, "He's out there in his
fishing boat", pointing to the field behind the house.
The brother heads out behind the house and sees his brother sitting in
a fishing boat with a fishing rod in his hand down in the middle of a
big field. He yells out to him, "What the heck are you doing?"
His brother replies "I'm fishin'. What the heck does it look like I'm a doing?"
His brother yells back, "It's people like you that give people from
Saskatchewan a bad name, making everybody think we are stupid. If I
could swim, I'd come out there and kick your ass."
Nov.23/11 - I hope you all have been enjoying the new 2011 Whitetail Deer Gallery. It has been a pretty good season so far as you can see. Last year our success rate was 90% with a Mid 150s average. Great year it was. This year is a little slower but still pretty good. Between the three camps we have shot 5 over 170 inches. I am waiting as I write this for a giant to come in that we fill will go over 180s pretty easy. I will let you all know on the gallery what he scores when we get that done later tonight. Weather has been crazy. Very cold last week and 35 F today. But still on a warm day today at 2:30 PM one of the biggest bucks we have been chasing went down today. The lucky fellows name is Mike Crawford. I am excited to hold this buck. All the bucks we have shot this year are great looking deer and great people that have joined us again. I apologize for not being on here more often. Doesnt take long to shoot a quick note and I WILL do better. Happy Thanksgiving to all of my US friends. Take care and talk again soon.
Grant
Nov.3/11- Things are going great over here at the Goodsoil camp! The season is starting off strong and by the looks of the pictures on the cam trackers it will continue to be a good one! We have had a very busy week setting up more spots and getting the guys out on some nice bucks. Rob, one of our guides, birthday was on Monday so naturally we had to celebrate which was a very good time, and happy birthday to Rob. John Prosak and Dean Kuypers are also up here at goodsoil working their butts off with myself and Rob. Great fellas to have up here helping run the show. Can't forget about Deans wife Janda who keeps us all well fed with the fine quisine she prepares. Mossy Oak is coming up in 2 weeks to film my brother Adam and my little Sister Andrea on a whitetail hunt so that will be fun, I think they are both pretty excited. Grant will be coming up here tonight to visit and meet the hunters which will be a great time! I dont get to spend enough time with him and I enjoy the time we do get to hang out. Deer season is in full swing and there is no better time of year than right now! All the pictures from the bucks killed to date are on the web page so check them out! I'm heading out to the shop to tidy up then probably out in the bush to check some cameras.
take care all!

Oct.29/11 - Been all over the map this week. Green Lake to get things rolling and helping out the boys there and keeping all the records and pics on the website up till I had to leave for home on Wednesday. It was Shelly and mines 20th Wedding anniversary. Busy time of the year so we did not do to much. Had supper with all the guides there and a glass of wine. We will celebrate it somewhere when the season is over in December. Then off to lloyd to pick things up for the P Hill camp. Man, losing that shop has made for a lot of extra work and expense, but life goes on and the new shop looks great. We painted the floor in it last night and then finished this morning putting the epoxy on it. It looks great and now I can finally put stuff in there for good. I am back at Green Lake now. Catching up with all the jaw samples and looking at the nice racks that were shot since I left on Wednesday. I will get them posted on the sight. Looking to be another great season. I sure do love it and thanks to all my hard working guides, cooks, cleaners, kids and wife. Love all you guys!!!!! Time to post some pictures. Grant out!
Oct.24/11 - Hello Everyone. Grant here. Yes, still alive and kicking. Harvest is in the bin. Would still like to get some more field work done, BUT it is Whitetail season. We have started out with Archery/Muzzleloader season here at Buck Paradise and our first day which was today was a great start to our 2011 season. 3 bucks down all in that 145-155 range. 2 with a bows and 1 with a smoke pole. Nicole Jones with Driven TV got to sit a big 20 minutes this morning when a nice 155 that she has watched grow for the last 3 years came across. The buck only went 20 yards and was done. Great job Nicole. Mike Yahnke who hurt his ankle really really bad, could not miss out on the trip. Thanks to the hard work of Johny Prosak we got him set up comfortably along the lake and he arrowed a beauty 10 that scored 148. Then a new hunter to us Tim Johnson smoked another beauty Mid 140 class buck also right out of the gate this morning. Great way to start the 2011 season. Stay posted. Grant.
Oct 22/11- Things are looking awesome for the fast approaching deer season!! Fall gets my blood pumping with the colder weather rolling in and the forest coming alive with both wildlife and hunters, I'm pretty excited about the next 6 weeks that will be filled with fresh air, adventures in the bush, excitment of great clients and friends harvesting trophy whitetail, making new friends and stories and the list goes on..... The weather has still been moderate for this time of the year but things can change very fast. I am at work in the oil field for another 2 days and will be ready to giver when I get back to Goodsoil. Everything is set up and ready to rock in Paradise Hill, Green Lake and Goodsoil. All the guides have been putting in long days making sure things are just as they should be for the hunters. We had 2 cancelations at the Goodsoil camp so if any of you are interested please get a hold of Grant 1(780-214-4638) or Brandon 1(780-870-6510). The dates available are posted on the home page. Anyone who keeps up with us who can't make it this year to hunt, I wish you the best of luck hunting on your home ground. Well keep posting pictures throughout the season in the galleries and blog in here as much as our busy schedules allows us.
Take care all
B-Schreibs......OUT!
Oct.13/11- Well I believe I am educated now on how to update and post new things on this web page! Grant and I had a “web page convention” over the phone this morning and I think I have a handle on this puppy! We had an amazing waterfowl season with many successful hunts and limit shoots. Now that we are wrapped up with birds it’s on to whitetail which we are already in full swing with. Check out the 2011 whitetail gallery for updates on cam tracker pictures and also the video galleries for new videos. Grant and I just posted a few new ones in there today and will do our best to keep up on it. It’s a very busy time of year for us and now that I am on board with the operational aspects of this web page I will do my best to help out Grant and keep you all up to date with what we are up to here at Buck Paradise Outfitters! Take care everyone, keep in touch, and see some of you in a few weeks!

Oct.01/11 - May finish combining today.... YES. A excellent crop. Rain in the forecast this afternoon. Better go. 200 acres to go and if we get going shortly, we will get done! Goose hunting has been excellent. Bear hunting has been excellent. Deer are looking big. Shop is just bout done. All good!!!! Later. Grant.
Sept.16/11 - Been burning the candle at both ends. Living on my combine the past couple of weeks and loving every minute of me. I love farming as much as I love outfitting. I am a very fortunate man and thank God for it. Crops are very good and coming off. I have been doing a lot of custom work and will get started on my own next week. All canola this year and it looks good. I am a little concerned with the frost we had Tuesday night. It was a gooder. But I think my stuff is advanced enough. Watch out for Mike Hanbacks "The buck stop here" with Mike Hanback tonight on Versus 8:30 EST. He took down a huge 200 incher last fall with us and it will be some awesome footage and a awesome show. Hope you enjoy. Brandon & John are in camp helping me out. New shop is coming along great. Waterfowl hunters arriving Sunday. I love this time of the year. Been so busy. We will get busy on our website now that we are hunting again. Some cam trackers are just being put out and the boys have been busy cutting trails and we had a terrible wind storm this summer that made the bush a mess. All part of it. Have a great day. I am heading back to the COMBINE. Check out and enjoy the video on the home page. I love it and Thanks to Shelly for sending it to me. Love you! Have a great day everyone!!!!

Aug.28/11 - Fall is in the air. Geese are starting to fly over the farm. I love it. The Shop is coming along good and hopefully in about 2 weeks we can start moving stuff back in and work out of it. Thanks so much to my neighbor and one of the best carpenters in the world Milton Pederson for working his butt off to get it done. He is so awesome and his work is the best. My canola is looking good. Hopefully get cutting it later this upcoming week sometime. I will be busy in the shop this week and will start getting equipment ready for the harvest. Still have some great waterfowl dates available. It is going to be a banner year with all the water we have and crops in these parts are great. Here is a little article done up about Buck Paradise Enjoy!

Local outfitter featured on TV show

By Andrea Nicholl
Paradise Hill will get more than a few minutes of fame with two episodes airing on the national TV series The Fowl Life.
The TV series recently visited the rolling landscape of Paradise Hill to film two episodes of local waterfowl hunting with Grant Kuypers, local Paradise Hill hunter and Buck Paradise Outfitters owner.
“It was a lot of fun, but a little more work,” Kuypers said of hunting with the film crew. “Trying to hide cameras when you’re huntin’ is always challenging, but when it all comes together it’s pretty awesome.”
“It’s one of the best experiences a hunter can have.
Kuyper says the exposure of Saskatchewan’s hunting opportunities is great for the community and a boost to the economy.
“We support the community of Paradise Hill quite heavily,” said Kuypers. “It’s definitely a huge impact for us. Outfitting as a whole brings a lot of money into Saskatchewan.”
“Most of the waterfowl hunting seasons don’t start in America until mid-October or even November, so it’s a great opportunity for Americans to come up to Canada and catch some waterfowl, to break the ice and get their feet wet again because they’re itching to get out there,” said Kuypers.
In addition to world class waterfowl hunting, the Buck Paradise Outfitters camp also offers whitetail deer hunting and black bear hunting.
“We’re in a pretty good part of the world for all the kinds of hunting that we do,” said Kuypers.
“On the shows you’ll see a storyboard of what happens in Canada. It’s not just a slam dunk, you have to work and you have to be dedicated to making it happen every day. Saskatchewan has some of the finest waterfowl hunting to offer no matter where you’re at.
“The thing about Saskatchewan is that there’s so many different species of waterfowl and they’re so abundant to where one day you can be hunting mallard ducks over a pot hole, the next day you can be hunting Canada geese over a pea field and the next day you could be hunting a huge flock of snow geese over a wheat field,” said Kuypers.

Aug 17/11 - Good Evening everyone. The wind has been delaying the putting up of tin, but we did get the West wall and 1/2 the East wall put up today. Hopefully the wind will stay calm tomorrow and we will finish the East side and start on the roof. Garet and I went in to Lloyd tonight. I found a new tool box for sale and so we went and picked it up along with a bunch of other tools that we will be needing. My semi was also in Lloyd getting a service before our harvest starts up and a few other little things that it needed and brought it home. Weather has been very good. Not much rain lately and hopefully it stays that way for awhile. Once we get the tin on and the window put in on the shop, it will be pretty much just inside work left. It is going to be awesome and I am so excited to have a shop back. I was also busy with helping our community put on another fundraiser for the new hall we plan to build in the near future. We had a tribute to Fleetwood Mac & Abba from a group of folks out of British Columbia. I really enjoyed them. We had about 500 people and a bit of a auction and I would hope we made around 30k. I dressed up for the occasion..... It was to say the least crazy and I am not sure what got into me to wear such a outfit, but it was so much fun. Thanks to all the came out and supported. I am looking forward to planning next years bash. Well hopefully we get that tin on tomorrow. Been pretty consumed with the shop. I do have to spend some time with a hail adjuster tomorrow morning. We had another storm come through here a few weeks ago and the adjuster figures there may be a little damage. So we will go see. Thats about it for now. 50 New trail cameras on there way. That will bring me back close to 100 so that is pretty much how many I lost in the fire. Take care all. Grant.
Aug.9/11 - Condolences to the Kevin Wenger family on the loss of Kevin's Dad "Dennis". Dennis of 66 years left us suddenly with no warning last week. Kevin has been guiding at Buck Paradise for the past 5-6 years. Sorry bout your loss Kevin and to the rest of the family. Been a pretty sad week with Dennis passing and then we had a very terrible accident here last weekend in our neighboring town of St.Walburg when we lost a good young man Kyle Larre to a very unfortunate accident. Kyle was only 22 years old. Our Condolences to the Larre Family. So sorry for your tragic loss. So, ya. Give your Dad's and Mom's, wifes & husbands and Kid's all a hug. Tell them you love them.... The shop is coming along nicely now that we have the pad finished just about.... Milton, my neighbor and a awesome carpenter has been giving er on the shop. All the walls will be up by tomorrow and Tin on possibly this weekend or early next week. I am excited to get into it and start putting it all back together. The crops are looking awesome. We are lucky and I hope the Big white combine (hail) and frost stays away. Been calling up some of my old goose hunters and trying to round up a few guys but things seem a bit tough and it has slowed the waterfowl bookings up a bit. Funny as bear and whitetail have been over ok, which I am very thankful for. Shelly won a 4 tickets to Reba Macintyre tonight in Saskatoon. I am waiting for her to get back from work and for my Brother Dean and Janda to get here to come with us. Garet & Ian have been busy helping around the farm. Garet had the week off from his regular job of cutting grass on oil leases. Harvest and Waterfowl season is around the corner. Lots to get ready and I seem to have a hard time getting out of this office at time. Take care all and will chat again soon.

July 14/11 - Good Evening Everyone. Well again apologies for not being on here for awhile. Garet and I just got back from Michigan. He was invited down there to play some hockey. He played at 4 different colleges. They would have a practise skate in the morning and then tour the campus and then a game in the afternoon and then off to the next college. He met a lot of great guys and played some great hockey. He really enjoyed it. It was great exposure and a great expierence for him. I watched him the first day and then I was off to Traverse to go see a bunch of my friends up there. I stayed with Stan Burke a long time friend and client of Buck Paradise. Stan shot a 190 with us last year and the awesome mount was already in his office. It was the Cherry Festival down in Traverse last week. It was really nice to go there and see that. I helped Stan as he has a booth at the Cherry Festival were he sells a very popular sandwich called a Gyro. It is lambs meat and beef mixed on a Pita bread with Tomatos and Onions and a sauce. They are awesome. Anyways, Stan has a crew of about 5 people in there going hard making these Gyros. I helped out for a few days and became a pretty good Carny. Stan has a awesome boat and we spent some time on Lake Michigan chasing some King Salmon and Steel heads and Lake trout. It was great and we had awesome weather and put some nice fish in the boat. I went and watched Garets last game in Ferris on Saturday and then we headed back to Traverse as I wanted to try to put him on some fish in Stan's boat. It was a little slower but Garet caught 2 nice steelhead and 1 nice King Salmon. So it was great. We then jumped in our rental and went to Prescott and saw some other good friends that have been up with us over the years. We spent the night at Bill & Tonya Schagels place. Bill has a great dairy farm going there and they are very busy people building some new barns and getting the feed in for the year. We then headed to Hale and went to Bernard Building supplies and had a nice visit with Bryon, Brian, Bruce and the rest of the crew. They have a BIG facility and a awesome business going there. It was great to see them all and I know I missed lots of guys from Michigan that come up here but I hope Garet will get another invite next year and I will try to catch a few more. I really enjoy seeing what everyone does and meeting there families. It was great and a Big Thank you to all the I did see. Ian has been having a great summer and is at the fair with his Gf tonight. I hope to take Ian and Garet fishing up north in August before we get to busy. The shop is is is , well I am not going to talk about it right now. Crops in these parts are looking great on the most part. Shelly and I went for a nice drive tonight and I am very happy and feel fortunate to have such nice crops. Still awhile before they are in the bin yet. Going to head to the lake this weekend as it is suppose to be hot out. HEY, I just watched Chad Belding "The Fowl Life" tonight. Both show 1 & 2 were with us at Buck Paradise and both were awesome. I am going to try to get them posted on my waterfowl hunt video gallery and I hope any of you that missed will check it out. Chad did a great job promoting Buck Paradise and at the same time made a great show to watch. Thank you Chad. Well I hope everyone has a great weekend. Talk to you next week.

June 28/11 - How is it going everyone? Been pretty busy the last 9 days. Had to head up to Green Lake and cut the grass and do some whipper snipping. My good nieghbor Norman is out of commish as he pulled some muscles in his stomach and is pretty sore. So I will head up once a week and take care of it. Also keeping up with the yard here and slowly watching some progress on the shop. We WILL have cement next week and then hopefully Milton can get started on it and then things will start to progress. Dealing with the Insurance also and really not sure what to expect there, but I would guess it will not cover all that was lost. A good start but far from covering it the way it is looking. Oh well, better than nothing. My Canola crops are looking pretty good and I am keeping my thumbs crossed so to get a great crop. I have 940 acres of it in so I hope it works out good and the same for all of my neighbors crops. Garet and I are off to the states for a hockey camp that he has been invited to. He tours 4 different colleges and practises each morning and then tours the campus and then a game in the afternoon. He started his job cutting grass on oil Leases today. He seemed to like it. We are both looking forward to a little vacation together. Shelly and Ian are going to head to Calgary sometime to visit her sister and folks. I am also planning my fishing trip to Alaska with Bowers at the end of July and I am really looking forward to that. I love the Kenai River and Bowers company. Brother Dean and good friend Pookie Glen Fester are coming along again. Should be fun. I have to Liquid Nitrogen to apply to one of my fields tomorrow morning and then off to Lloyd to the Insurance Adjusters again for a little meeting. It is all going really good. I will also be working on waterfowl bookings as I have some really good spots left. That is all I know for now. Take care all and I will try to get on here again soon. G OUT!
June 19/11 - Happy Fathers Day to all you Dad's out there. You deserve it. I am having a very nice one with my family. Received some new cologne that smells great and we are going out for dinner tonight and a movie and looking forward to that. Been getting a lot of rain the past week. I believe since May 27th we are close to 5 inches at the farm. Crops are looking great but we need some heat now and hope it dry's up a bit so we can finish spraying. The boys and I worked hard between rains last week working in the yard cutting grass and working the weeds out of around all the trees we planted last year. Good job to get done. I spent a day in the office trying to catch up with all that business to. So been very busy. Yesterday again between rains the boys and I took our mowers and whipper snippers and cut the grass at the cemetery were Dad is. It was getting pretty bad but looks good now. My neighbors came and gave us a hand to and then we came back to the farm and had a couple beers while it rained outside. This week I plan on spending some more time in the office and as much outside doing things as I can. Shop is coming along SLOWLY!!!! That is all I have to say about that. It will I promise be ready for fall. I Hope! Other than that. Things are good. I will keep in touch with you all on here from time to time. Take care and have a great day! Grant
June 8/11 - Well little bummed that its all over. I love the bear season, actually I love all of the seasons. Before you know it we will be chasing geese around and that is another one of my favorite times of the year. I look so forward to all of the hunting seasons and the changes in the weather. I am truly blessed to do what I do. What a great 2011 spring bear season. 42 hunters including my son Garet with his first bear. We shot 42 great bears with great hides (well there were a couple) but overall it was awesome. We shot some coloured bears this year. Paradise Hill had a great week with 9 hunters and 4 were beautiful coloured bears there. I hope to do more hunts there next spring as it is a awesome bear area. We still have so many pictures of big bears out there yet and I anticipate next year being awesome. We seem to have more bears every year. Thanks to all my guides - Skip, Johny, Kyle, Jason and Hans who all helped out. Corey Jenkins came up for a few days and helped out. Thanks buddy. Thanks to all my other staff. Colleen & Allyson at Paradise Hill, Christine, Janette & Cindy for all of your help. I made a pretty cool video up of a thankyou to everyone. I will do my best to put it together and get it on the sight asap. Thanks to all my awesome hunters. We really appreciate you and could not do it if it werent for all of you coming to Buck Paradise Outfitters. Thanks!!! Grant
June 01/11 - Hello Everyone. I hope you have been enjoying all of the great bears that we have been getting on the 2011 Bear Gallery in our sight and our videos that I try to find time to put together. We have 32 dead bears on the ground and we have 9 more to go so hopefully we fill out in the next couple of days and we will stay at 100% success rate. We have killed so many big bears this year already, and I have a LOT of pictures of Big bears still out there. They are smart though. We need some rain in these parts. Crops are in and most were up and then we got hit with a hard frost a couple of nights. I am hoping that only some of my canola was up and got froze off and that there is still more to grow now. It is suppose to rain tomorrow some so I hope it does. We will be finished bear hunting mid next week and then we will clean up and head back home to see how the shop is progressing. Bout all I know for now. Take care everyone! Grant
May 21/11 - Another beautiful day. Unloaded the pontoon boat last night after I finished baiting and caught my first pike of the season. It was awesome. Had a good day of baiting yesterday and they were all cleaned up. Weather has been fantastic. Ron is seeding my canola and I would imagine he will be done by Tuesday if all goes well. We had another great week of bear hunting. 5/5 with some big bears. Check them out in the photo gallery. Norb & his Dad and buddy Dave rolled in late Wednesday evening. We got them out hunting and they all saw bears. They are still all three hunting. Well I am off to go feed some more bears. Everyone is busy and thats all good. Could not ask for nicer weather. If I get done early today I am going to go try to catch a few walleye. Still a couple bear openings if anyone is interested. You wont regret it. Grant.
May 17/11 - Just chatting on the phone with Brandon Schreiber. He uploaded a bunch of pictures on the 2010 waterfowl hunts. Did a great job so go check them out. We have Matt Hughes from the UFC hunting with us this week for bears. Great to Have Matt back in camp. He passed a pretty big bear up last night. It was the first bear that came out so he wasnt a 100% sure to take him or not. We will see what happens tonight. We shot two bears last night. Roger Thompson from Michigan put down a nice black bear. Unfortunately Roger had to leave us this morning as a good friend of his passed away over the weekend. We will see Roger this fall again. We also have a writer up Jeff Stonehouse. Jeff arrowed a nice black bear last night. After he shot his bear of course a big ol bear comes walking in..... Happens a lot. Terry & Blake Goodale are in camp and had a great night seeing multiple bears last night also. Well I am going to go eat some fresh Pike that the guys caught yesterday. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Later all. Keep an eye on the photo gallery for new bear pictures coming in daily. Grant
May 15/11 - Second group of hunters arriving today. Weather has been absolutely beautiful. I have spent a lot of time on the tractor getting my fields ready for seeding. Good moisture out there. The leaves are out and things are greening up. We had 9 hunters last week. We were 8/9 in 3 days. 2 Black bears over 400lbs and 1 chocolate over 300. The 9th fellow shot his bear Friday night. So we are a 100% success for the first week. 5 blacks and 4 coloured bears. Great week. I have a group of 8 coming in this week and the baits are getting just hammered. I hope to have my crop seeded (Canola) by the end of this week. That will be nice. All my wheat is hauled and things are going good. Hoping to start on the shop here this week also. Busy busy. Check out the Bear video Gallery. Brandon and I will be working hard on it throughout the next few weeks. Later all! Grant
May 6/11 - Off to my second funeral of the week. We are burying Shelly's Grandmother today. She was 98 years old. A very great lady. We also buried my 27 year old 1st cousin on Monday. That was very tough. Shane was a great guy. Not sure what has happened yet but none the less it was horrible. It was a very sad day. So I have been between Green Lake and funerals all week. I just rolled in. Skip, Kyle, Johny, Brandon, Barcley & Jason are finishing up the last of the baits up there today. We have hunters coming in here on Sunday. The boys will all be back tonight and refresh all the Paradise Hill baits and hopefully get some of our new cameras out. We are also starting to work in the fields today and I have to haul wheat tomorrow. So very busy and that is good. Aaron & Jason are up from the US doing some shed hunting. They are doing great. I will get some pictures on here for you all to see. Aaron has a lab that helps find them. Amazing dog. Take care all. Grant.
April 30/11 - Had the boys changing cultivator shovels yesterday. They can put the new ones on today. Was a little frustrated as I could not find the tools to take a simple tire off yesterday so off to Walburg I go and loaded up on some more tools. Missing that shop, but we will be back in the new one by fall I hope. We hope to start getting some work done on it next week. GSP fight tonight, also Randy Couture is fighting. I am looking forward to this card. Should be a great one. Skip is heading up in the bush to check and rebait 3 baits that him and Jason put out. The baits are starting to look really good. My new trail cameras will be here Tuesday. We plan to head to Green Lake maybe today or tomorrow. I have two funerals to attend next week also, plus get some grain hauled in towards the end of the week, keep baits going around the Paradise area and get into the field. Hmmm. Should be busy. Kyle and Barcley will arrive Sunday so that will help. Better run and get Garet and Ian started on that cultivator. Have a great day everyone!!!! Grant
April 29/11 - Been a very busy week. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, I was busy cleaning oats that I grew last year. I will sell them for seed this spring. Skip has been busy in the bush with his son Ty who was up to visit us for the week. He and his Mom and Skip went out on Wednesday and had a great day together in the bush baiting bears and hanging tree stands. Garet & Ian have been busy helping me around the yard. They spent one day pressure washing the old shop floor getting all the black soot off of it. I am going to keep that pad and build a pole shed over it. It will be good for parking equipment and for washing vehicles as the pump still works on it and the floor is so nicely sloped. But it is not good enough for a new shop to be put on it. The new shop will be put kitty corner to the North West of the old shop. I am looking forward to getting started on it and that should start soon as the frost is pretty much out. Bear baits are getting hit good. No cameras yet to see what is out there, but they should arrive hopefully in the next few days so we can get them out there. Well I have to get Garet and Ian started working on our cultivator. Johny Prosak showed up late Wednesday night and he is out in the woods with Skip today rebaiting and fine tuning some stands. Later. Grant.
April 23/11 - Hello everyone and Happy Easter to all. Had a pretty busy week with getting some baits out and getting a semi load of trail mix out of the states delivered up also. I have some pretty interesting video and will try to get it on here today. Long story short, the truck driver that brought the 40 000 plus pounds of trail mix up took the wrong road into our place and got stuck. It took two huge Skidders to get him out. It was interesting to say the least. Yesterday we went baiting again. Garet and Ian came along with me. Skip and some of my neighbors and great friends came with me and we had a awesome time. Some of my old buddies were home for Easter. We had a great time to say the least. Well I have to clean up my truck today and the ranger and just hang out at home with my family. Next week we will be getting some farm equipment ready baiting some more bears and just working away. Still have a few bear openings if anyone is interested. Take care and Happy Easter.

Two Polish hunters got a pilot to fly them into the Canadian wilderness where they managed to bag two big Bull Moose.
As they were loading the plane to return, the pilot said the plane could take only the hunters, their gear and one Moose.
The hunters objected strongly saying, "Last year we shot two, and the pilot let us take them both.... and he had exactly the same airplane as yours."
Reluctantly the pilot, not wanting to be outdone by another bush pilot, gave in and everything was loaded.
However, even under full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down, crashing in the wooded wilderness.
Somehow, surrounded by the moose, clothing and sleeping bags, Stosh and Stan survived the crash.
After climbing out of the wreckage, Stosh asked Stan, "Any idea where we are?"
Stan replied, "I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year."
April 15/11 - Snowing outside today.... Oh well. It is suppose to warm up so I don't think it will last long. They really got it good in Southern Alberta. We are just getting the tail end of it. The snow we had from the winter was just about gone. Skip, Jason & I went up to Green Lake on Wednesday to get a few things we need here for our bear hunt at the Paradise Hill camp the week of May 8-14th. Still a couple of openings for that if anyone is interested. I picked up a new Polaris Ranger on Thursday. Nice unit. 800 cc with Power Steering. So I am excited to get it out in the bush to see how it works. Also picked up a good used Skid steer the other day to. So we are slowly replacing things. Going to take awhile though. I have to go to town today and do a little business and may go to Lloyd to pick up a few more items that we are going to need to get us through the bear season. Garet is skating in North Battleford this weekend for AAA prospect camp. I hope he does well. Ian is p oed that it is snowing. He wants to go quading. I am heading to Saskatoon tomorrow afternoon. There is a SCI Banquest & Fundraiser there and I have a table for it. So should be fun. Hopefully I will get out in the bush a bit next week to get some bear baits going. Excited for that big time. Was 3 years ago yesterday that we lost Dad. Miss him a bunch. Went to my brother Deans bar in Paradise Hill. He is holding a steak night there every Thursday night. Steaks were awesome. If you are in the area. Come check it out. It was busy and good to see the neighbors and friends of the community. I am off to town. Take care all. Grant.
April 7/11 - Goodmorning everyone. The snow is going away fast here and it is good to see spring. Yesterday I headed into Lloyd for a doc appointment. It was just a consultation for a colonoscopy that I will get done this fall. I feel great, but colon cancer is prevalent in my family so I am starting early with checking on it. Then Shelly and I went to our neighbor Ray's funeral. He was 74. A great neighbor and he will be missed. This afternoon we are going to another funeral. Walter, who with his wife owned St.Walburg Building supplies. Walter took good care of us when we were building our lodges and shops, we had lots of good dealings together. He was also be missed. On the up side of things, Garet and I are off to Humboldt after the funeral to a Junior hockey camp. He was invited to attend, so he is going to go check it all out. I hope he has a good weekend and I will get to enjoy watching him play. Ian is just happy staying at home and playing on his quad. He found a used 2008 Honda race quad and he loves it. And like I mentioned below Skip will be rolling in on Sunday. The boys are getting excited to get out in the woods and so am I. It will be a later spring for farmers to get out in the fields I believe this year. Thats about it for now. Take care all and have a good weekend. Grant
April 5/11 - Well we are back from the long trip to Madison WI. It was a great time and we sure surprised my buddy Gomer when we drove into his drive way. We spent the night there and had a great time and visit. Then on Friday we were back off to Madison to the show. Pat & Nicole were there and welcomed us into there booth were we spent most of our time. I met a lot of my old hunters and gained a few new ones while we were there. Sunday around 5:00 PM the show was over and we were on our way home. About 24 hours later non stop I rolled into the yard exhausted. Great to see Shelly and my boys. So, I am in the office today dealing with phone calls and catching up on emails and lots of stuff going on. I am off this weekend to Humboldt, SK with Garet for a hockey camp. Skip will be rolling in next Monday to help me start cleaning up the shop. There is still a little to much snow to get in the bush yet to start baiting. But soon. I still have a few openings left. Call me. Later all I got lots to do. Take care!

Mar.31/11 - Brandon and I are sitting in our war room in Madison, WI. Had a great nights sleep after the 23 hour drive and just throughing ideas around for this and next years business ventures. We are excited about this new sight as I have already told you. Please email your friends the link. www.buckparadise.com Brandon & Dean and I will be on here a lot with new videos and journal updates making this a sight worth visiting day after day. Also I will be working on getting our picture gallerys full of awesome pictures for you all to enjoy. Beautiful day here in WI. Going to go wash my truck and then head to Burlington to go hang with Matty Owens and Gomer Erickson, then back here tomorrow for the show. Take care all and have a great day.

Mar.30/11 - 24 Hours of driving and Brandon, Johny P and I are in Madison, WI. We were going to bring my semi part way and pick up a load of bear bait, but paper work and insurance made it not worth doing. So we decided to come down anyway and see a bunch of great friends and promote Buck Paradise throughout the weekend at the Madison, WI. Deer & Turkey Expo. Pat & Nicole from Driven TV will be there and we will be hanging out with them and with our good friends Matt & Julie of Northern Air Trophy. You will find us at or between there two booths. Looking forward to hanging out and visiting and spreading the good word of Buck Paradise out there to all that are interested. So, ya we left Saskatoon, SK last night at Midnight and showed up here in Madison at our hotel at 7:00 PM. 23 hours. Drove all night. Great company with the boys and it went by fast. I am tired though and a bed will feel good tonight. Tomorrow we are off to Burlington, WI. to surprise my very good friend Gomer Erickson. Gome and I go way back. He has no idea I am in the neighbor hood. Should be fun. Take care all and if you are at the show. Come say hi. Grant
Mar.27/11 - Goodmorning all. I uploaded a video Journal this morning about the shop fire. Go check it out. On the homepage under the video it says click here for more videos. Do that and then go to the Video Jounal link and click on that and you will see the a picture of the shop after the fire video. Click on that and enjoy. I hope you guys are having a good time on here and not finding it to hard to navigate around. I am spending most of the day in my office today working a bit on the sight and insurance. Have a great day!

Mar.26/11 - Happy Sunday to everyone. Hope you had a great one. Mine was ok. Friday afternoon I worked in my office most of the day and then I was off to Potney Lake where we were having our fishing derby the next day. Some of my good friends were out there plowing a parking spot for the vehicles and clearing the ice off were we had the derby. That evening, Shelly and I went to a dinner and motivational speaker by the name of John Gormley. I have heard John speak before and he is awesome. It was a fun entertaining evening. We got home early and made some posters up for the fish derby the next day. I was up and at it early. My neighbor Terry came over and we both hooked up on two of my enclosed trailers and off to the lake we went. Garet & Ian were with us also and they were a big help. Thanks boys. The only problem with this day was the weather. It was windy. We feel that we lost around 50-100 people because of this. 58 People braved the winds and entered our 4 hour derby. Unfortunately the fish did not cooperate and no fish were caught.... At all. It sucked. We drew names out of the hat for all the prizes we had. I then headed to the Bantam Rage hockey Provincial Final. This is the team that Garet played with last year. They lost which sucks. Then I headed to the bar were I was invited by the Paradise Hill Hawks Mens team that Garet played on with a bit this year. They had a nice get together. I headed home later in the evening. Today was pretty uneventful. Just worked on my website a bit and cleaned up my truck a bit. Later all. Grant.
Mar.25/11 - Goodmorning everyone. Thank you to Glen and Scott at MCM Outdoors for the awesome job they have done with my website. I am enjoying it a lot and working on it is fun and very user friendly. Thanks guys. Spring bear season is approaching fast. Garet and Ian have been collecting meat scraps filling up our barrels and hauling them in the freezer here at home. It is awesome to have two good strong boys to help me with this now. Also with Garet having his Drivers license saves me some running around also. Thanks boys. I have 44 000 pounds of Trail mix coming up for this spring also. Trail Mix is the bomb for bear bait. They love it. I am so excited to get out there this year. I love being in the woods in the spring when everything is coming back to life from a long ol winter. I have been busy working with insurance slowly getting everything written down that was lost in the fire. It is a little overwhelming at times, there was so much stuff in that shop. We hope to be rebuilding early this spring and have it finished before waterfowl season. Well I know that bear season is coming, but I want to share a story with you that one of our clients and very good friend Jerry Harbottle wrote up about his Saskatchewan Whitetail hunt with us this past season. Enjoy.
Last 5 Minutes…last day
It was mid-October, and I was hunting mule deer in Idaho with a good friend of mine that is a white tail nut. By the end of our hunt, he had talked me into hunting white tail deer in Northern Saskatchewan with his good friends Grant Kuypers and Brandon Schreiber, owners of Buck Paradise Outfitters. I am fortunate to have a gracious and understanding wife that allows me to pursue my passion throughout the year, even over the week of Thanksgiving.
This last minute decision is likely to be one of the best “last-minute hunting decisions” I have ever made.
We arrived in Northern Saskatchewan on Sunday, November 21, 2010. Although my friend Brian Bowers has hunted white tail with Buck Paradise Outfitters for the past seven years, he had never hunted out of this particular camp. On Monday morning, we awoke to negative six degree Fahrenheit temperature and overcast skies. Upon my return to camp that evening, I learned that Brian shot a 170 inch white tail at 10:30 that morning. I was extremely excited for Brian as this was the biggest white tail buck he had ever shot, and he of all people deserved it.
Throughout the week, the temperature continued to drop. By mid week, the temperature had hit lows of negative 17 and highs of negative 3. I would see between four and eight bucks a day on average, and I had passed on several bucks pushing the 150 inch mark. I had set my goals for an old heavy buck or a buck that would score in the mid-150s or better. By the fifth day of the hunt, everyone in camp (except me and one other guy) had filled their tags with beautiful mature Saskatchewan white tails. On the sixth and final day, Brandon and guide Johnny Prozak wanted me to try a new area that had not been hunted in the past eight years. Access to this new area is very difficult because you have to cross miles of swamp land that is impassible until a heavy freeze (for a week or more), usually in late November.
The day started kind of slow until 10:30AM when a spike fed its way through the birch trees. The spike continued to look over its shoulders, and shortly thereafter a small eight-point fed into the opening. Then, the eight-point continued to look over his shoulder, and I thought, “This could be the one,” but a couple of minutes later a nice ten-point with a broken left eye guard and broken G3 on the left side came into the clearing. This buck would have scored in the mid-140s “as is”, but I was prepared to go home empty handed if I the right buck did not show up.
The rest of the day was uneventful as there was very little deer activity. I attributed this to the fact that it had warmed up on the last day to 33 to 34 degrees. As the light started to fade, I had all but checked myself out: I would be heading home with yet another deer tag in my pocket as a result of holding out for something really good, but this is also when things got really exciting!
I like to give credit where credit is due, and my guide Johnny (who had arrived only moments earlier) said that he noticed some movement through the birch trees at the edge of the opening. I had just gotten out of my blind, so I put my rifle up to my shoulder and peered through the scope as the giant buck appeared. At this point, I was kneeling down on one knee and using my other knee as a rest for my left elbow in the shooting position. At the shot, the buck jumped straight in the air and stumbled when it landed. He regained his footing, ran 25 yards and piled up in the snow.
Johnny and I both ran to the buck as quickly as we could, and we were absolutely blown away by the mass and size of the rack. After 15 minutes of congratulations, some jumping up and down and a lot of high-fives and hugs, we radioed back to camp to let them know we were on our way, and that we had just shot an enormous buck!
I hit one of the highest highs I have ever experienced hunting. It was the last five minutes of the last day of a six day hunt. I thought it was over!
The buck unofficially green scored 190 6/8 gross and 182 net typical. After the 60 day drying period, he officially scored 181 5/8” net B&C.
Grant Kuypers and Brandon Schreiber of Buck Outfitters Paradise run a top-notch operation, and I will be returning next year with my friend Brian Bowers.
Mar.24/11- Working on the new sight with my Tech Glen. It is going to be awesome.
Mar.08/11 - Well. Bad things happened this past Sunday evening. We were having a great weekend with Ian's Hockey and a skidoo Rally that Ian and I went to on Saturday. Sunday Morning we were up early and Shelly and Ian and I were off to Paradise Hill to jump on the bus for the 4 hour ride to St.Brieux. Ians team lost 11-8. Not bad as it is a total points in a two game series. So we are down 3 with home ice advantage next Sunday. Very doable to win and move forward to the Provincial final for Ian's group. Had a fun bus trip home visiting with the coaches and other parents. Shelly and Ian and I pulled in the yard at about 11:30 PM. Garet had been home all day by himself. I had a list of things for him to do like cleaning up around the shop and inside of it and keeping the fire going outside in the wood boiler which he did a good job of. I dropped Ian and Shelly off at the house. Ian wanted his hockey equipment washed and was going to take it in the house. After they got out I headed to the shop to park Shelly's expedition. I went to open the door. When I did this what I thought at first was just steam just rolled out under the door as it opened. But it was not. It was smoke. My first thought was were is Garet and I raced back to the house. He had just left the house and was headed to the shop to check on the fire in the wood boiler thats outside between the house and the shop again. I saw him and was very relieved. By the time I got back to the shop, flames were rolling out. There was not saving anything. We called 911 and both Paradise Hill and St.Walburg fire deparments were on there way. All I could do was sit there and watch. I was concerned as we had Natural gas plumbed to that shop also lots of little propane bottles that we use to heat the hunters heaters, bullets ect. So we stayed back pretty far. By the time the fire department was there all they could do was hose water on it but everything was gone by that time. My truck, skid steer, Ian's quad, my polaris ranger, 3 skidoos, all my hunting clothes and equipment, all the shop tools and contents, 70 some game trail cameras, hunting blinds, grain tester and the list goes on and on. In the bar part were my guns were in the safe we are not sure how they faired the heat. It is buried under a wall that fell on it, so I am not sure if all of our guns are okay or not. The Buck Hunter pro game, tv, poker table, pool table, my exercise bike, calls everything is gone. We were out there till 3:30 AM when the fire truck left. We had no water in the house as our pressure system was in the shop. We did have heat to the house and power for the night. Yesterday we started to work at getting water back in the house and we lost power for most of the day getting that done. Crazy huh. But I received tonnes of texts and well wishes yesterday. Appreciate that a lot and hey... life goes on. No one was hurt and all that stuff can eventually be returned. Some things like Corey Jenkins huge dall sheep horns and all the awesome whitetail sheds and moose sheds we had in there are gone. The Detroit Wings Jersey signed by the team and the Stevey Y signed Jersey gone. All the old antique guns we had on the wall are gone. I have insurance. Not sure if it will cover all of it, but it will get us a good start on everything. We will start to rebuild hopefully this spring. We will have to work out of our little shop this spring for bear I would imagine. But hopefully if everything works out we will be in a new shop for the fall. I am sorry to the hunters that had left totes of hunting gear in there. I don't remember who all did but sorry. Well I am meeting with an adjuster this morning. We are off to Spiritwood tonight with Ian again. His final game best of 3 for the league title. I sure hope they can do it. They beat them handly last week in there hometown so we just have to do it one more time and the boys will be there leagues champions. Take care all. We are all fine. Lifes bumps I call them. All good. Take care and we will talk again soon. This may delay me having some time for the new website, but I promise we will get it on here as soon as possible. I have to help put on a skidoo rally for this weekend, so I need to borrow a sled to make the trail. Should be a pretty busy week. Later. Grant.
P.S They figure it was bad wiring in that old shop that started it... Later
Mar 03/11 - I forgot. CHECK Out the homepage Cancellation hunt special that my sister and Brother in Law Selks Alberta Bighorns have going on right now. Later. Grant.
